Where Healing Begins: Why Gut Health Is The Foundation of My Practice
Finding My Niche: Why Gut Health Is at the Core of My Work
In nutrition, finding your niche isn’t something you force—it’s something that reveals itself over time. Through my work with clients, continued education, and a deep curiosity about the body’s innate ability to heal, one theme kept showing up again and again:
Everything comes back to the gut.
Today, my practice at Nourish Ridgeway is rooted in this understanding. As a Certified Functional Nutrition Practitioner and a GAPS Nutritional Protocol Practitioner, I focus on supporting and restoring gut health as the foundation for true, lasting wellness.
Why Gut Health Matters More Than You Think
The digestive system is about far more than breaking down food. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a highly intelligent, interconnected system that communicates with every other system in the body.
At the centre of this communication is the gut microbiome—a dynamic ecosystem of microorganisms that help regulate inflammation, immunity, metabolism, and even brain function.
When gut health is compromised, it doesn’t stay contained to digestion. It shows up everywhere.
The Gut’s Influence on the Entire Body
A properly functioning digestive system helps regulate and support:
Hormonal & Endocrine Health
The gut plays a key role in hormone balance, including thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and estrogen metabolism.
Immune Function
Roughly 70–80% of your immune system resides in the gut. When the gut is inflamed or imbalanced, immune responses can become dysregulated.
Mental Health, Mood & Cognition
Through the gut-brain axis, your digestive system directly impacts neurotransmitter production, including serotonin. Imbalances may contribute to anxiety, depression, and brain fog.
Muscular & Skeletal Systems
Nutrient absorption begins in the gut. Poor digestion can lead to deficiencies that affect muscle function, recovery, and bone health.
Detoxification & Glandular Health
A well-functioning gut supports the body’s natural detox pathways and reduces the burden on organs like the liver.
Gut Health & Chronic Conditions
One of the most important reasons I’ve chosen to specialize in gut health is its role in chronic, inflammatory disease.
When the gut is compromised—whether through dysbiosis, increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), or chronic inflammation—it can contribute to a wide range of conditions, including:
Bloating, IBS, constipation, diarrhea, and reflux
Autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease
Metabolic concerns like insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Skin conditions including acne, eczema, and psoriasis
Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
Anxiety, depression, and mood imbalances
Food sensitivities and intolerances
While symptoms may appear in different areas of the body, the root often traces back to the gut.
My Approach: The GAPS Nutritional Protocol
As a GAPS (Gut and Psychology/Physiology Syndrome) Nutritional Protocol Practitioner, I use a therapeutic, food-first approach designed to repair and restore the gut at a foundational level.
The GAPS protocol focuses on:
Removing foods that contribute to inflammation and gut damage
Rebuilding the gut lining with nutrient-dense, healing foods
Rebalancing the microbiome
Supporting digestion and absorption
Implementing detoxification practices
This approach is especially supportive for those dealing with complex or chronic conditions, particularly when conventional approaches haven’t provided lasting results.
A More Focused, Root-Cause Approach
At Nourish Ridgeway, my goal is not simply to manage symptoms—it’s to understand why they’re happening.
By focusing on gut health, we address one of the most foundational systems in the body. When the gut begins to heal, many clients experience improvements that extend far beyond digestion—into energy, mood, skin, hormones, and overall quality of life.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
If you’ve been struggling with ongoing symptoms, feeling dismissed, or unsure where to begin, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to navigate it on your own.
Here’s how I can support you at Nourish Ridgeway:

Follow-Up Consultations
Ongoing support to monitor progress, adjust your protocol, and continue moving you toward optimal health.
Comprehensive Blood Work Analysis
A stand-alone service offering an in-depth review of your existing lab work, with guidance on what to discuss further with your MD or Nurse Practitioner.
Healing is possible—and it often begins in the gut.
